BACK TO THE ARTIST   Rocks at Belle-Ile, 1886           Details     Description     Artist Monet, Oscar-Claude Monetnever tired of making trips up and down the coast of Normandy stopping at the most picturesque spots. In 1882 he rented the Villa Juliette at Pourville and made it his base for visits to the surrounding areas. He painted many rock outcrop scenes, most memorably at Etretat and Falaise, but here he treats the rock structure just as he would a country landscape, by blending in the crashing white surf with the craggy pinnacles. In such scenes,Monetoften decenters his landscapes by leaving wide open areas of sea and sky broken only by a grassy cliff top which edges into the lower left portion of the canvas.     Date 1886   Institution Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow     Medium Oil on canvas   Dimensions 65 ? 81 cm
